FRINTON STUN LEAGUE LEADERS

Frinton sent shockwaves through the East Anglian Premier League by a 6 wicket defeat of unbeaten league leaders Sudbury at Ashlyns Road on Saturday.

Having won the toss the visitors skipper Tom Huggins opted to bat in near perfect weather conditions. Huggins opened the batting himself but saw his fellow opener quickly caught LBW by Mervyn Westfield. Darren Batch (19) offered some support until caught & bowled by Mike Comber and shortly after Huggins departed for 38 to a good slip catch again off Combers bowling. Ben Parker then anchored the Sudbury innings with a hard fought 42 run 4th wicket partnership with Ben Reece (32). Parker topped scored with 41 until dismissed by Westfield and with some resistance from the tail the visitors managed 200 with the bat but with Frinton generous with 32 extras the total posted was 232 for 8 off their 64  overs. Westfield was the pick of the bowling attack picking up 3 wickets for 46 runs off his 16 overs.

The visitors were clearly confident that Frinton would not reach this target and were boosted by Jamie Poulson bowling both Frinton openers Joe Fowler & Mike Griggs for 2 & 12 respectively. The arrival of skipper Kyran Young steadied the ship and when joined at the crease by Mike Comber the pair showed why they have both been called up for Suffolk county duty as they put on a 162 run 4th wicket partnership without offering a sniff of a wicket. Comber held his bat for an unbeaten 104 which saw 11 boundaries including two massive sixes. The game was all but won when Young departed on 87 and Frinton crossed the line with 6 wickets in hand and 5 overs to spare.

The Young/Comber partnership was hugely enjoyed by a large crowd at Ashlyns Road. Club supporter Julian Todd explained ‘I was due elsewhere but had to delay my arrangements as I couldn’t take my eyes off the Frinton innings. They were hitting the ball so cleanly and hard it was a spectacle to watch and one of the best performances I have seen at Frinton’
